Type 1 Diabetes MellitusDiabetes is a metabolic disorder associated with defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. Insulin is a hormone produced by the beta cells of the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas, and is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. It is estimated that 5-10% of Americans who are diagnosed with diabetes have Type 1 diabetes. Up to 800,000 persons are estimated to have Type 1 diabetes, with about 30,000 new cases diagnosed each year in the United States. Although type 1 diabetes usually develops before 30 years of age, it can occur at any age. In fact, one-third of the cases of type 1 diabetes are diagnosed in adulthood, but diagnosis is rare after age 45.
